Guildford has all the major shops and boutiques, as does Southampton. Winchester and Chichester are both ancient Cathedral cities with good shops and an interesting selection of eateries and Restaurants. Chichester is 2 miles from the coast and the South Downs.
Farnham itself is an attractive old market town with more than the average listed buildings and is 2 miles from Bentley Mill. It has plenty of Restaurants and cafes and some interesting individual shops as well as some of the usual high street stores. It has a notable 14th Century Castle. There is a Farmers’ Market on the third Sunday of every month.
This being Jane Austen country means there is much reference to her in the area. Her brother lived, for a time, in what is now The Old Rectory in Bentley and her home is 7 miles away in the picturesque village of Chawton and the house can be visited most days of the week.
Guildford, Windsor, Woking and Winchester all have Theatre productions, some prior to London. The London Theatres are only one hour from here by way of the train. Guildford and Basingstoke have large cinema complexes.
The Naval Base at Portsmouth has been protecting British soil since 1194 and offers several museums and places of historic interest, two of note being The Mary Rose and HMS Victory. There are good shops and plenty of pubs and restaurants and nice views of the coast, including the Isle of Wight. Ferries run frequently from Portsmouth to the Island.
Thus the South of England is steeped in history and interest and only a handful of attractions have been outlined. Bentley Mill is situated in a location which makes it a very convenient base for exploring these and an abundance of different possibilities, or just as you find it, it is perfect in itself for a relaxing getaway... |
